Mortar Bed

A mortar bed is a thick cement-based layer that is created under tiles to make a stable, level, and durable base. It serves as a tile support foundation which can help in installing tiles over uneven surfaces.

A tile mortar bed is commonly used in the thick-set installation method which is also known as the traditional tile setting method. Unlike modern thin-bed adhesive systems, this method employs a thick cement layer that can be adjusted according to the requirement of support, leveling, and slope creation.

Role and Functionality

A mortar bed has an integral role in the preparation of the substrate to ensure a durable and long-lasting performance. It serves as a subfloor leveling base and corrects any form of surface irregularities so that there can be a uniform plane for tile installation.

It is especially important in wet spaces such as bathrooms and patios as it is used for floor slop formation so that water can drain with ease. A shower mortar bed forms the shower pan base and ensures safety and beauty in a shower. It is necessary as it provides a strong tile support foundation to both wall and floor tile installations and reduces the risk of movement of tiles or crack formation.

Composition

A mixture of cement, water, and sand is spread on a surface in a cement bed installation. This preparation is then shaped and compacted according to requirements.

For a sturdier surface, reinforced cement layer, combined lath or mesh with cement is used. Once formed, tiles can either be installed directly into the fresh mortar using a wet-set installation, or after the bed has cured, depending on the method used.
