Mortar
Mortar is a cement-based, tile bonding material that is used to fix tiles on surfaces. It not only holds tiles in place but also creates a stable and supportive base. It is a cementitious mixture that generally combines sand, cement, and water and hardens over time to form a strong and sturdy bond.

Composition of Mortar
Mortar is typically prepared on-site by mixing dry ingredients with water, which initiates the hydration process that allows it to harden and gain strength. The three major ingredients of mortar are:
- Cement: The primary binder. Provides the mixture its strength.
- Sand: Ensures structural consistency and reduces shrinkage during drying.
- Water: Activates the chemical reaction that allows the mortar to dry and set.
As this process continues, the mortar forms a firm setting bed layer that ensures reliable subfloor adhesion and anchors the tile securely.
Types of Tile Mortar
While the base composition of the mortar remains similar, many variations are designed to enhance particular properties and performance characteristics. Different types of tile installations need different types of mortar according to the tile type, substrate, and environmental conditions.
- Thin Set Mortar: It is the most popular type of mortar. Thin-set mortar is applied in a thin layer in regular floor and wall installations.
- Polymer Modified Mortar: It contains additives that improve the flexibility, bonding strength, and resistance to temperature and moisture changes.
- Traditional Mortar Mixes: These are used in thicker applications where additional support and leveling is necessary.
Mortar is applied over stable surfaces like concrete or cement boards, which support effective subfloor adhesion. It is used in most types of tile installations including residential, commercial, wet spaces, and outdoor installations. Selecting the right type of mortar ensures better compatibility and long-term performance.
