Moisture Resistance
Moisture resistance is the tile's ability to reduce the absorption of water when it is exposed to wet or damp conditions. It is the measure of how well a tile can maintain its appearance, structure, and performance in the presence of water, moisture, or humidity.
Moisture resistance majorly depends on the absorption rate and the density of the internal composition of a tile. Moisture resistant tiles are particularly practical in environments such as bathrooms, kitchens, and other wet areas.
Factors Affecting Moisture Resistance
At its core, there are three major factors that govern the moisture resistance of a tile. These are:
- Absorption Rate: A tile with low absorption rate has fewer pores that are often extremely minuscule. Such pores restrict entry and movement of water, thus making a tile highly resistant to moisture.
- Composition: The type of tile and the way it is manufactured significantly affect moisture resistance. Porcelain's body density is one of the highest in the case of tiles. That's because porcelain tiles are fired at high temperatures, creating a compact material that has little to no porosity.
- Surface Treatment: Typically, a tile with a glazed or sealed finish provides a moisture-resistant surface than other unglazed tiles. Such tiles repel spills and splashes. When a tile is glazed, it creates a reliable surface for bathrooms, kitchens, and even outdoor areas.
Applications and Use
The importance of moisture resistance becomes most apparent in spaces where tiles are frequently exposed to moisture. In such settings, having a high moisture resistance is a must as it directly affects the ease of maintenance and longevity of the tile. Moisture resistant tiles are more commonly used in:
- Kitchens: In kitchens, moisture-resistant tiles can be used as backsplashes to protect walls from everyday splashes.
- Bathrooms: Used to create long-lasting shower walls and bathroom floors.
- Utility Spaces: Can be used in laundry rooms and mudrooms where tile can tolerate humidity and occasional water spills.
- Outdoors: Most moisture resistant tiles work well in outdoor spaces such as patios. Certain tiles such as porcelain can also be used in gardens and pools.
- Flooring: Used in spaces where anti-slip property is integral, including hotel lobbies, restaurants, and bars.
