Low Porosity
What is Low Porosity?
When a tile absorbs little to no moisture to its dense internal structure, it is said to possess low porosity. Due to low porosity, various liquids such as water cannot pass through the tile surface which makes it act as an almost impermeable surface. Generally, a tile that has an absorption percentage that is 0.5% or lower is known as a low porosity tile.
Structure and Formation
To ensure low porosity, tiles are manufactured using special methods that make them compact, dense, and highly resistant to absorption. Major characteristics of low porosity tiles include:
- They are produced using high-temperature kiln firing and high-pressure compaction.
- The dense body composition of the tile is improved through vitrification which also reduces internal voids.
- Low porosity tiles have a dense surface structure and fewer pores than regular tiles.
