Flexural Strength

The ability to resist breaking even when a bending force is applied is known as the flexural strength in tile. In simple words, it is the measurement of how much strength a tile can endure before it cracks. It acts as an important indicator of load-bearing performance, structural performance, and overall reliability of the tile in actual situations.

Flexural strength checks how a particular tile, whether floor or wall, acts when stress bends it slightly, instead of compressing or getting scratched. Other characteristics of flexural strength include:

  • It measures a tile's ability to resist bending stresses before breaking.
  • It measures resistance to tensile stress that forms during bending on the underside.
  • It is an important indicator of the tile's durability and crack resistance.

Tiles are rigid, but the surfaces or substrates on which they are installed are not; this is why it is necessary to take into account flexing and shifting.

Testing Flexural Strength

A flexural strength test is used to check the flexural capacity by simulating real-world use conditions and applying them to the tiles until they fail.

The test uses a three-point bending method in which force is applied to the center while the two end points are supported. This is used to calculate the amount of force required to cause breakage, which is expressed in pressure units (MPa or psi). It is a recommended test to compare the performances of various tiles such as porcelain, ceramic, and stone.

What Affects Flexural Strength

A large number of installation and material-related factors are responsible for the flexural strength of a tile. Some of the major ones include:

  • Material: Porcelain tiles generally have higher strength and density.
  • Thickness: Thick tiles are typically able to bear heavier loads.
  • Manufacturing Methods: High-pressure pressing and extrusion play a significant role in influencing the internal structure and density of a tile.
  • Substrate: Flexible and uneven substrates cause high bending stress.
  • Quality of Installation: Without proper adhesive coverage, voids can form beneath the tile and weaken the support.

Checking the flexural strength in tile is essential while choosing material for a long-lasting, strong, and durable installation. High flexural strength ensures stability and strength in high-traffic area flooring. It improves pressure tolerance. It is essential in the case of large-format tiles, especially for high-traffic areas. Strong tiles are a must for residential, outdoor, and industrial flooring.
