Crazing Resistance
Crazing resistance is the tile’s capacity to withstand the formation of fine, hairline cracks, known as crazing, in its glazed surface during normal use. As these lines are extremely fine, they typically do not affect the structural integrity of the installation immediately; however, they are detrimental to the hygiene, appearance, and long-term durability of a tile, especially in moisture-prone environments.
Crazing is a result of the mismatch between the thermal expansion rates of the tile body and the glaze. When exposed to temperature and moisture changes, tiles undergo stress. If the tiles’ glaze cannot accommodate this stress, it begins to crack, showing visible crazing. To maintain the appeal, it is necessary to consider tile glaze crazing resistance as an important performance factor, particularly for glazed ceramic tile.
Tiles that have a high ceramic crazing resistance typically have well-matched glaze and body compositions, ensuring both elements contract and expand at comparable rates. This helps to keep internal tension low, providing a stable and crack-free surface even under volatile environmental conditions.
Crazing resistance does not allow micro-cracks to develop on the surface of the tiles, which in turn prevents the entrapment of dirt, grime, and bacteria. It also preserves a uniform and clean finish that repels water.

Crazing resistance in tiles is particularly relevant in:
- Bathrooms and on shower walls
- Kitchen walls and backsplashes
- Swimming pools and wet areas
- Outdoor installations
Evaluation and Testing
Glaze crazing resistance is determined through controlled testing methods that mimic real-world conditions. These tests include:
- Thermal Cycling Tests: In this, tiles are exposed repeatedly to low and high temperatures to simulate contraction and expansion.
- Moisture Expansion Tests: Tiles are subjected to humid or water-rich environments to check the reaction of the glaze.
- Chemical Exposure (in some cases): Tiles may also be exposed to cleaning agents or mild chemicals.
- Visual Inspection: Once the above tests are done, tiles are checked for glaze disruption, fine cracks, and surface lines.
- Performance Evaluation: Finally, tiles that show no visible crazing are classified as having high glaze crazing resistance, while those with minor or visible cracking are rated lower
Crazing Resistance vs. Prevention
While tiles that have strong resistance to crazing are generally the preferred choice, this property can be enhanced through proper installation and usage. Using compatible installation materials and avoiding excessive stress are integral to tile crazing prevention.
