Back Buttering
What Is Back Buttering?
Back buttering is a tile installation method that involves spreading thin-set mortar directly onto the back of a tile before placing it onto the substrate. This technique is often used alongside standard troweling on the surface to ensure full mortar coverage.
By applying mortar to both surfaces, installers can eliminate air pockets and improve the tile’s bond strength. This is especially important for large-format tiles, textured tile backs, or installations in high-stress areas.
Why Back Buttering Is Important
Proper mortar coverage reduces the risk of tile cracking, hollow spots, and bond failure over time. It also helps tiles sit evenly and improves load distribution across the surface.
When to Use Back Buttering
Back buttering is recommended for large tiles, natural stone, outdoor installations, and areas exposed to heavy traffic or moisture. Many industry standards require this method to achieve adequate coverage.
Using back buttering correctly results in a stronger, longer-lasting tile installation with improved performance and durability.
